Always busy! After a few weeks of staring at blank canvases which seemed overwhelming i have finally got going again in a rather obsessive way.

Going into the post Hockney era felt a bit empty, most of the artists that inspired me when I was art school have gone, having lost several friends in the last year has been hard. The art world seems less excited in a way with the passing of this incredibly talented and inventive individual and the AI generated stuff. But i have always stuck to my guns.

Really nice to chat to other artists who battle for inspiration at times too. Mine always resolves eventually usually by reconnecting with nature, a wild camp, a dip in our incredible ocean or a sunset hike that just feels more exciting than the last.

Then i am ready to paint again....and

when i paint , i paint i mean i really paint! Before this i visited some rather lovely exhibitions and was fortunate to be invited as a judge at this years international pensychnant art exhibition! Go see it if you can there is some brilliant work on display.

Cwm Cynfal, Oil on canvas

In Snowdonia, there is a Cwm which provides escape from the modern world. One of the last remaining temperate rainforrests in the UK. A home to rare mosses, lichens, liverworts and birds.

A magical place where the water has carved out beautiful cauldron like shapes into rock faces after a storm. Although I have not experienced this after a storm I would imagine it is quite noisy when the river charges through this narrow cwm to the valley bellow.

The water has a peat like appearancd the dark reddy / brown but clear. The sunlight finds its way through canopy above in places highlighting and strengthening colours.

I enjoyed painting here. Prints are also availiable of the majority of mh paintings.

Have we seen the last of the snow for another year?

The day I stood on top of the mountain was cold, really cold. There was no one around, no footprints, tracks and paths covered, behind me the cloud rolled in, however for just a few minutes I enjoyed this view before I was engulfed with a whiteout. I knew it was time to descend!

Who else has experienced mountains in these winter conditions? Its really special isn't it!

Finished this one at last! This will feature in my museum solo show soon (details to follow).

I thought Spring was here but woke to snow capped mountains this morning. Snowy scenes have always been something i have found difficult to paint. Not only because painting from life is a massive challenge because conditions can be harsh, but from the point , some colours are really hard to mix or even obtain.

This was Inspired by Akseli Gallen-Kallela who painted Lake Keitele which is hung in the Impressionist section @nationalgallery. I used to stand in front of this painting on school trips. It just used to glow in front of me. The light is superb. I have always wondered or aspired to paint like this and to obtain that glow in my work.

I have always been captivated by reflections. Not far from the binocular caves in Eryri there is a beautiful swamp, if you catch it at the right time of day the sunshine illuminates the quarry and casts beautiful reflections of the trees across the water.

I have painted very few forrests but after visiting Cwm Cynfal in Snowdonia a few weeks ago I realise that I have totally fallen for this beautiful temperate rainforest.

I spent hours there on my own phorographing and recording its beauty. The birds sang, the river roared through the gorge falling from pool to pool. The place reminded me of my childhood in Devon swimming in the river dart on Dartmoor.

This place is far more remote. I never saw a soul. I find it really sad that it is underthreat from a proposed hydro scheme.

This painting is the first of many of Cwm Cynfall and will be exhibited at Penyscyhnant Conservation Centre in April and May.

I am delighted to be exhibiting there!

Castell y Gwynt or Castle of the winds is the only Welsh 3000ft mountain to be classed as a Nuttall. Its beautiful both in the summer and in winter conditions. Good navigation skills are needed in bad visibility.

Its always windy up there. I have been lucky enough to have been up there many times jver the last four years.

A bit of a scramble to stand on the top though! 🧗‍♂️

Painting a cloud inversion

I am pleased to announce that I have been back in the studio after breaking my wrist!

I really enjoyed painting this study for a larger painting.

Yr Wyddfa / Snowdon is Wales' highest mountain ⛰️

I am lucky enough to have been there many times and it is one of my favourite places.

To capture an inversion when the clouds ⛅️ look like candyfloss and below the summit is truly magical.

Prints are available via my website from Monday.

A broken arm adventure exploring Gogarth!
I have a dream to climb and paint there more as soon as limb heals.

I managed to scramble down to the promontory to look at a Dream of White Horses. It's been a while since I have thought about serious seacliff climbs.

Until then physio, rest, research and occasional field trips are needed.
